The Slate's purpose is to report on the spiritual, academic, social and political climate of the university, and to provide a forum for discussion.
The Slate staff meets once a week in a newspaper practicum class that publishes up to five papers each semester.
GAINING EXPERIENCE
The Slate offers students a chance to learn journalism by simulating a real newsroom environment.
Reporters and photographers cover campus events, issues and people. Student columnists share opinions and reviews. Graphic designers lay out the newspaper, and copy editors check for errors and write headlines. The photo editor oversees pictures in the paper and on the Website. The ad manager works with businesses that want to advertise, and the online editor makes sure content gets loaded to this site. A student editor oversees the process, with help from a faculty adviser.

HISTORY OF THE SLATE
The Slate began in 2000 under the guidance of Robert Edkin, former editor of the Redding Record Searchlight.
The Slate has won two first place designations in the American Scholastic Press Association annual contest.
